KAJANG – The Minister of Education, Fadhlina Sidek, has described the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results as among the best in the examination's history, proving that the quality of education in Malaysia is continuing to improve. She said the Ministry of Education (MoE) will continue implementing key initiatives, especially those that have contributed to the improved performance, in order to further enhance future SPM results. Among the areas the ministry will continue to focus on, she explained, are student attendance and narrowing the achievement gap between urban and rural candidates. “Attendance is a significant area of improvement. Our intervention has helped reduce absenteeism. Similarly, the performance gap we can clearly see the improvements, and we will continue these efforts,” she said.

“Last year, we also introduced targeted interventions to increase pass rates for core subjects Bahasa Melayu and History so that more students would be eligible for certification. “This year, we achieved that goal, which means more students are now qualified to receive their certificates. There are still many areas to improve, and we are taking this seriously to ensure even better results in the years to come,” she added. Fadhlina made the statement to reporters after celebrating with SPM candidates at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Convent (M) Kajang today. The 2024 SPM results marked the best performance since 2013, with the National Average Grade (GPN) improving to 4.49 compared to 4.60 in 2023 (lower is better). Analysis of the results showed an increase in the number of students who achieved straight As Grade A+, A, and A- in all subjects, rising to 14,179 candidates or 3.7% compared to 11,713 in 2023.

Director-General of Education, Datuk Azman Adnan, also reported that the number of candidates who obtained at least a credit (Grade C) in all subjects rose to 86,040 in 2024, up from 83,112 in 2023. Fadhlina added that this achievement should further motivate teachers to focus on teaching quality in the classroom while addressing areas that need improvement. She also encouraged all students to pursue further education regardless of the results they received. “There are plenty of opportunities in this country, and God willing, we will continue to provide full support for all our students,” she said.
Commenting on the MoE’s recent directive that SPM result announcement ceremonies at schools should include all candidates not just high achievers Fadhlina clarified that every candidate contributes to the school’s, district’s, and state’s overall average grade. “They have all made an effort and contributed to the overall achievements in terms of qualifications, credit passes, and excellence. “I believe that we should proudly celebrate all student outcomes, and these results should encourage them to continue their education to higher levels,” she said.
