Malaysia is swiftly progressing on the international scene, especially in vital areas like semiconductors, data centers, and artificial intelligence (AI). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently highlighted that for the nation’s students to achieve future success, they need to acquire proficiency in new technologies and skills. "We must excel in digital technology and AI across any field, as these are the technologies of the future. To succeed, mastering these technologies is essential," Anwar stated at the "Majlis Santuni Kasih Bersama Pelajar-Pelajar Parlimen Tambun" event.
He highlighted that Malaysian universities have already established AI faculties, but stressed that schools must also move quickly to adapt."We cannot afford to plan for five years before making a move. Implementation must start within the same year. If we cannot begin with 100 schools, then we must start with 50. We must have the courage to bring change," he said. Anwar further pointed out the importance of mastering English for trade and business, while noting that proficiency in Mandarin is becoming increasingly essential given China's growing economic influence. While Malaysia has achieved commendable progress, the Prime Minister warned that the country is facing a shortage of skilled workers, particularly engineers, to meet the demands of international companies investing locally.
"Right now, we have renowned companies in AI, digital, and semiconductors, but if we maintain the current trajectory, we will be short of 30,000 engineers," he added. Beyond technical skills, Anwar also cautioned against narrow-minded ideologies based on race and religion infiltrating the education system."I don't care if it’s a Malay school, religious school, Tamil school, or Chinese school there must be no such ideology because it will divide and ruin our country," he stressed.
Why AI Must Be Introduced Early in Schools
Introducing AI education at the school level is no longer optional it is essential.AI is reshaping industries, from healthcare and finance to agriculture and entertainment. Early exposure to AI concepts such as machine learning, automation, and data literacy will ensure that students are not just passive users of technology, but active creators and innovators.

Students who are equipped with AI skills will have a competitive edge in the future workforce, be better problem-solvers, and have a deeper understanding of how technology influences society. Incorporating AI into school curricula also helps foster critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability qualities that are vital in an era where many traditional jobs are being transformed or replaced by technology.
Malaysia’s Next Big Step: Technology-Led Education
For Malaysia to truly thrive as a competitive, high-income nation, it must take bold steps to integrate technology across its entire education system. This means:
Modernizing school infrastructure with better internet access, smart devices, and AI-driven learning tools.
Training teachers to understand and teach AI-related subjects effectively.
Collaborating with tech companies to provide real-world exposure and mentorship opportunities for students.
Creating flexible, updated curricula that include coding, robotics, data science, and ethics in AI.
Education is the foundation for national progress. By embedding AI and digital literacy into the heart of Malaysia's schooling system, the nation can ensure that its youth are prepared to lead not follow in the digital economy. As Anwar pointed out, Malaysia must act now not five years from now. The future belongs to those who are bold enough to embrace change today.
